DAMANE is the largest insurance company in Mauritania created in October 2010. It is 42 percent state-owned with a capital of MRU600 million. With a workforce of only 15 people, their main clients are some of the biggest companies in Mauritania including SNIM, Somelec and Mauritania Airlines.
They are specialized in fire, engineering, cargo marine liability, transport and aviation. The overall premium volume reached 1.7 billion MRO last year and made DAMANE Assurances SA the market leader in Mauritanian Insurance for the engineering, goods transport and aviation services.
They also offer other type of insurances as life insurance but the market is not still developed. DAMANE Assurances SA was certified ISO 9001: 2008 after a process of upgrading to standards and auditing started in 2014.
Their operations agreement excluded DAMANE to operate in the Automobile insurance market. They work in insurance and re-insurance but they have no activity in the latest so far since the market is again not very developed. They have agreements with reinsurance international companies like Lloyds or
SwissRe.
The article 199 of the current Code of Insurance of Mauritania outlines that it is prohibited to place risk outside of Mauritania for operations in the country but it can be overcome through a special agreement with the
regulator only for a 50% insurance value.
Damane owns one of the landmark buildings in Mauritania and it is very active in placing funds in the public treasury and banks. It is a strong company with a solid background.
In general, Mauritania still lacks professionals in the sector but DAMANE sends its people for training overseas with their partners. For special requirements, DAMANE has also a network of advisors and loss adjusters.
“We need experts in the insurance sector in Mauritania, which lacks of expertise. The main obstacle to develop the sector is the risk insurance that has to be placed abroad. In any case, we are a strong company concerned in
training people to deliver quality services”, said Mr. Mohamed Ahmedou Jereb, General Manager of the company.
"Our ambition, he says, is to offer specialized industrial risk insurance which is our area of excellence and
competitiveness. Also, offer our expertise and skills at the service of customer satisfaction and at the same time guaranteeing loyalty, transparency and trust to our customers. Developing our partnership with Mauritanian mining and industrial operators and foreigners is always kept in mind for Damane. To sum up, to become a key player in Insurance and Reinsurance in Mauritania and in the sub-region"
